Hi, my name is Artur and I’m 22 years old Partner Channel Marketing Manager at Microsoft working for a Russian subsidiary.

**In this article**, I want to share my learning path to pursue my dream career in one of the largest corporations on the globe. 

## Changing approach

I was not a very passionate student. Getting my degree in RANEPA in the field of Management/Marketing, I wasn’t really sure that this was the right choice. 

It was 2017 and programming languages were booming: everybody got to know them. **I tried and I failed.** 

I started learning Python on Udemy free courses and couldn’t comprehend a thing! I was frustrated and devastated at the same time. 

“I will never be somewhere around IT!” -, I thought. 

And I’ve decided to change my approach and get laser-focused on my current studies at the university.

## Small steps, big dreams

Quickly I realized that if you can put your mind to something, you’ll eventually grow your expertise. 

I remember Math, Informatics, Business Development, Business English, Management, and Digital Marketing as the cornerstones of my future career. 

I learned that **asking questions is the only way** for me to grasp the concept, and I had to solidify it by getting back to it at home. They say if you don’t know something, perhaps an Indian guy is already teaching it on YouTube. They are great at teaching, by the way, I love them.

So, I was consistently expanding my understanding of fundamentals, step by step getting to my first great learning – working for an international cybersecurity company.

## Hardening soft skills

During my onboarding at Kaspersky, I had to get exceptional at multitasking: a whole lot of new data, first full-time job and I’m still studying. 

At this point, I was not only expanding my hard skills: working in MS Office and other applications, but also getting my soft skills trained. You see, I was green, and I had difficulty conveying my point of view. So, I’ve decided to enroll in my first big course on Coursera devoted to Negotiation. 

Honestly, it was **perfect timing**. I had some issues at work that couldn’t have been solved without this wonderful course. Learning more about the art of negotiation, interconnection and communication allowed me to gain the confidence to move further in my career.

## Shift before the jump

Then I started working for L’Oreal and again, dozens of materials that I had to familiarize myself with. 

At this point, I wanted to start over my programming learning, and I’ve started the course ‘Python for Beginners’ at Stepic. It’s free and interactive, which allowed me to practice more and network, which eventually gave me a deeper understanding. 

Here, I crystallized my approach: study at work on how to get your work better, study at home on how to make your life better. 

As you can see, there is no option that you don’t study. I love learning new and so at that point, I was learning Python, Investing, First Aid, Spanish, and Nutritiology for myself and E-mail Marketing, CRM, SEO, SMM, CJM, and Project Management for my job.

## The Big Stepper and Mr. Nadella

**I got a job offer at Microsoft** after a few months for L’Oreal. 

I’m a non-stopping, never-resting learner and the corporate culture is encouraging this approach. In less than a year I learned more than in the last 3-4 years. 

Courses on Marketing, Management, Resilience, and Project management; badges and certifications in Sustainability, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion and Azure Fundamentals. 

Sometimes, we don’t even notice the learning possibilities a company has to offer, not to mention free and cheap opportunities on the web. 

**One of the greatest concepts I learned** here at Microsoft that will really stick up with me is that in order to find success, we need to switch our approach from “know-it-all” to “learn-it-all”. Be a constant learner and you will always be one step ahead of your past self.

This story is not only about what the title says. This story teaches us that you can achieve anything as long as you believe in what you are doing.

Hi there! My name is Bashir. I’m 23 y.o. I am an IOS developer at a large IT company. I’ve been working as a developer for two years, and I’ve already worked at four companies. ### Academic background
 
I finished school and moved to Moscow to get a banking education at the Moscow banking school under the Bank of Russia where I was studying four years. That was the time when I realized that programming is my strong suit. I agree, it’s not the most typical way to get to it. At college, I enjoyed solving mathematical tasks. I did it quite well. I didn’t start learning programming with a book. I used a few websites to take this path. Of course, after passing a few lessons, I got confused and I quit. It went repeatedly. I was sure that there was no chance to master programming without a university. A little later, after I got hired at the bank in a support team in 2018, I met and got to talk to many developers there. It turned out that only one of them had a proper academic degree. Others took courses and studied on their own.

**I got really inspired and decided to change my approach to self-education. At first, I decided to read two books:**

This book gave me an understanding of object-oriented programming. It took me two weeks to complete and fully understand the material. 
 
2.   Ruby on Rails Tutorial

The second one was a bit more difficult. There were many professional terms that I didn’t know back then. This book took me 4 MONTHS to finish. Then, I realized that I didn’t manage to work as a support specialist and study programming as much as I wanted simultaneously. 

### How I found a job
 
My goal was to find a job and work as a developer. I made a small project and began the search. I couldn’t find anything after 3 months and quit programming because of the university which I got into in 2019. I took a little break and started over during the summer of 2020. I wanted to understand which field of programming to choose.
 
Actually, iOS development interested me from the very beginning. The reason why I didn’t go for it then was the fact that I had a weak Macbook Air 2015. So, the equipment needed to be more productive to write a code. For a while, It took me away from immersion in iOS programming.
 
I switched over to [Machine Learning](https://www.edleed.com/catalog/subject/Computer%20Science?study=Machine+Learning)  and [Data Science](https://www.edleed.com/catalog?category=IT+%26+Software&subcategory=Data+Science)  but eventually I didn't enjoy ML for some reason.
 
In the middle of October, I started iOS over again. This time, I was dedicated to it. I read a book on Swift and tried to code. This book got me so excited, so I finished it in terms of one week. In February, I found my first job! Don’t think that it was easy! I sent my portfolio to a fair number of companies and got rejected over and over again. Then, two companies invited me for an interview and only one of them offered me a job. The huge disadvantage of that job was that I didn’t have a mentor. So, I got stuck.
 
Having been working there for 5 months, I decided to change job. Finally, I found a job at the Mobile Development Studio where I was working as an iOS developer. As a team, we were always sharing thoughts about tech and different approaches to problem-solving. By the way, there were no senior developers at the Studio. So, we educated ourselves by finding solutions and discussing them on our own.
 
Well, I quit that job and found another interesting opportunity to grow. I got hired at Yandex as a Mobile Developer. Now, I’m working here and I’m very happy about it. At the same time, I’m still studying something new. I watch online conferences and read many articles and books to enhance my knowledge even more.

Every learning experience is unique. There is an educational system in every developed and developing country. Although there is a system that is supposed to organize this process step by step, every person has a unique experience throughout their life. 

So, it’s tough to say if there’s one approach that will definitely help you. 

# The real story of a 21-year-old blockchain developer 

I got a chance to have an interview with Ilya Vlasov. He is an outstanding developer who, at such a young age, has handled to work in two companies: Everstake and Friktion. During our conversation, we covered a few following topics: 

* Academic background. How did he approach university? Did it help him?
* Why Blockchain? Where did it all take place?
* How does he study in general? His approach.

## Academic background. Did studying at the university help him?

His study process took place at the university of MIREA - Russian Technological University. Speaking of positives, he found linear algebra classes, math analysis, and algorithms classes more than helpful. University helped him to set up the system of knowledge. There, he studied Neuro analysis, Machine Learning.

At the beginning of his studying process, everything was great. Then, he started noticing one weakness of the Alma mater. There was a lack of student-professor communication. He wished they had more projects where students and professors could participate together. He believed that this would have helped him improve his knowledge and problem-solving skills.

He had decided to quit university and study entirely on his own. At the time, he was studying tech documentation which he found on a London Imperial College website, where professors and students published their research. It was a breath of fresh air for him!

## Why Blockchain? How did he start learning?

Speaking of prior experience, he knew how to code using GoLang, how to work with databases (SQL), and how networks work.

One day, he met a person who knew the cryptocurrency industry. He was a financial specialist. As a matter of fact, he had never paid attention to this market before, but eventually, he was into it. He was very excited to create a small project with his new friend. 

Long story short, they did the project and achieved impressive results. It took a month. Finally, he realized that he wanted to learn more about blockchain. So, this is how he got into the blockchain industry.

## How does he study in general? His approach.

Most of the time, he studies on his own. I enjoyed reading books about C++, algorithms, or whatever field I found interesting.
