When was this recorded? There is an accepted and very credible argument that Van Gogh did not commit suicide but was accidentally shot by some boys. The teacher here never mentions this, but seems to build the entire course on why, why, why did poor Vincent commit suicide? Even if this was not an issue, he speaks soooo..... sloooowly. After the second lecture, I said, 'Enough is enough. No more.' The Great Courses needs a course on Van Gogh, but this one should either be updated or scotched altogether.

Not a typical look at van Gogh. This is a close look at his life mainly in terms of where he was living and what he was doing there. Not a detailed look at his painting. I enjoyed these lectures.

We were familiar with a couple of Van Gogh paintings but had no idea of the volume of works that he produced. This course provided a lot of in-depth information surrounding not only Vincent's art but the circumstances leading to his inspiration. It was enlightening to learn about his contemporaries and his relationship to them. Well done.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. The lectures are clear and nicely narrated. The course encompasses discussions of other van Gogh's contemporary painters thus adding value to the lectures. I think the course is totally worthwhile and recommendable.

I had intended to cover one lesson per evening as I have done with other courses. However, I so enjoyed these lessons that I found myself viewing several each night. The comparison of Van Gogh's work with the actual locations in which they were completed creates a powerful picture of Van Gogh's life, and approach to his work. Underscored by the reading of his letters to his brother, Theo, they demonstrated Van Gogh's thought process and state of mind at the time of each of his works. The uniqueness of Van Gogh's work is clearly illustrated, supporting both why his work was unappreciated at the time it was created, as well as why he is now one of the most recognized and revered artists of his time. The course is carefully and professionally prepared in terms of video of the the various settings that Van Gogh painted, the paintings themselves, and the narrator discussing the sites and paintings. They all blend together to create a thorough compilation that tells Van Gogh's story beautifully and understandably. I would rate this course as the best one I have viewed out of the 10-12 I have seen so far. Thank you for this great course.

This is the best Great Course we have viewed. Its combination of excellent scholarly narrative, marvelous visual settings, well-chosen musical accompaniments and the brilliant display of 100's of Van Gogh works offers any viewer deep understanding of this artist and his times.

This is an outstanding, if too brief, overview not only of Van Gogh's life and painting, but also of the art world surrounding him, including relevant treatment of the times before and after his life. The professor is superb. And the visuals, as one would expect, are plentiful. Highly recommended.

I have over a hundred courses (from TGC) and this is one of the absoute best. I knew quite a lot about van Gogh before the course and he have been an inspiration for decades. Have visited excellent museum in Amsterdam (and Paris) and read at least 3 biographies but still learned a lot from this excellent course…A joy to watch
