So, understand this how it is. Memrise is a good way to start learning a new language, but you need to do some extra work to be able to speak it and understand by hearing.

Video content is a massive source of knowledge people use on a **daily basis**. There is not one strict set of rules you should follow to use **video content** in educational purposes effectively. You should be flexible with it.

**Let’s find out** how you can approach it to get **maximum results** in learning a new language.

**In this article**, I’m going to share with you a few tips I use to learn languages with videos on YouTube.

## 1. Watch different types of video content

YouTube library provides with the huge amount of video material that can be possibly used for **educational purposes**.

### Educational videos

**Usually** these are videos where a teacher formally explains a specific grammar topic. 

It applies to all videos that **focuses** on the way a language you’re learning works.

#### These are the examples of educational language learning videos on past tense:

1.	Learn Spanish Tenses: Preterit (Past Simple) – What you need to know!

### Vlog-type videos

The title speaks for itself. These videos are the purest imitation of how real **native speakers** talk. 

You can travel to another country just playing a vlog. It’s magical, _isn’t it_?

**Of course, this formal has some PROS and CONS:**

**PROS:**

* The language is authentic. You don’t need to be physically in this language environment to learn how a regular people speak their language.

* This helps to integrate more in the culture. You will get to understand inside jokes, references, and other cultural peculiarities. 

**CONS:**

* Most of the time, native speakers talk incorrectly. They don’t strictly follow grammar rules making a language learning process even more difficult for learners.

* Bad language habits can stick to your tongue even if you want to speak properly.

### Topic-based videos

Videos that have a purpose of explaining a topic that has no connection to a language being spoken from a linguistic standpoint. 

The words will stick to you quickly because this is what you like and learn in your native language. So, it’s only one difference. You watch it in a language you learn. I would call it a double win.

## 2. Collect words and phrases you perceive

During the process of watching videos in educational purposes you should **keep in mind** that all words bloggers say in their video can be included in your vocabulary. 

It doesn’t apply only to educational videos. It also applies to vlog-type of videos and topic-based videos.

If you hear the same phrase **over and over again**, it might be a chance that you will need it too in your speech in future. 

**Write down frequently repeated words.**

**Sometimes**, words don’t work without a context. So, be careful with **word connections**. 

## 3. Practice Using New Vocabulary

Imagine situations when you will probably need those written words and create sentences with them.

There are a few things you can check whether you use those words correctly:

* Google your sentences (Google Translate)

Try to input your request on Google and you might find other option with the same meaning or correct yourself if there is no request with such words put together. 

Be careful! Websites are made by people. They can make mistake as well. 

So, find as many requests with the same words and structure to make sure that the example you input earlier is commonly used.


* Marketplace for tutors and learners (e.g. Preply, Italki)

You can book a lesson with a native speaker and ask them directly: _is it correct to say…? How can I paraphrase it?_ 

Native speakers are **always ready to help** foreigners learn their language. 

**Don’t be afraid of saying anything wrong!** :kissing_face:

* Social networks for language learners (e.g. Tandem, HiNative) 

Text **native speakers** to practice a living language that people actually use on writing.

## 4. Imitate a native speaker’s speech

Language learning is not only about memorization of words and phrases. The way you speak and pronounce words are **also important**.

**Luckily**, you can find pretty much every single dialect on YouTube and learn the one you enjoyed hearing.

## 5. Find time to practice every day

Subscribe to a few YouTube channels of all types of content and practice your listening skills every day.

Try to spend at least **30 minutes a day** on listening native speakers concentrating on their speech.

Hi, my name is Artur and I’m 22 years old Partner Channel Marketing Manager at Microsoft working for a Russian subsidiary.

**In this article**, I want to share my learning path to pursue my dream career in one of the largest corporations on the globe. 

## Changing approach

I was not a very passionate student. Getting my degree in RANEPA in the field of Management/Marketing, I wasn’t really sure that this was the right choice. 

It was 2017 and programming languages were booming: everybody got to know them. **I tried and I failed.** 

I started learning Python on Udemy free courses and couldn’t comprehend a thing! I was frustrated and devastated at the same time. 

“I will never be somewhere around IT!” -, I thought. 

And I’ve decided to change my approach and get laser-focused on my current studies at the university.

## Small steps, big dreams

Quickly I realized that if you can put your mind to something, you’ll eventually grow your expertise. 

I remember Math, Informatics, Business Development, Business English, Management, and Digital Marketing as the cornerstones of my future career. 

I learned that **asking questions is the only way** for me to grasp the concept, and I had to solidify it by getting back to it at home. They say if you don’t know something, perhaps an Indian guy is already teaching it on YouTube. They are great at teaching, by the way, I love them.

So, I was consistently expanding my understanding of fundamentals, step by step getting to my first great learning – working for an international cybersecurity company.

## Hardening soft skills

During my onboarding at Kaspersky, I had to get exceptional at multitasking: a whole lot of new data, first full-time job and I’m still studying. 

At this point, I was not only expanding my hard skills: working in MS Office and other applications, but also getting my soft skills trained. You see, I was green, and I had difficulty conveying my point of view. So, I’ve decided to enroll in my first big course on Coursera devoted to Negotiation. 

Honestly, it was **perfect timing**. I had some issues at work that couldn’t have been solved without this wonderful course. Learning more about the art of negotiation, interconnection and communication allowed me to gain the confidence to move further in my career.

## Shift before the jump

Then I started working for L’Oreal and again, dozens of materials that I had to familiarize myself with. 

At this point, I wanted to start over my programming learning, and I’ve started the course ‘Python for Beginners’ at Stepic. It’s free and interactive, which allowed me to practice more and network, which eventually gave me a deeper understanding. 

Here, I crystallized my approach: study at work on how to get your work better, study at home on how to make your life better. 

As you can see, there is no option that you don’t study. I love learning new and so at that point, I was learning Python, Investing, First Aid, Spanish, and Nutritiology for myself and E-mail Marketing, CRM, SEO, SMM, CJM, and Project Management for my job.

## The Big Stepper and Mr. Nadella

**I got a job offer at Microsoft** after a few months for L’Oreal. 

I’m a non-stopping, never-resting learner and the corporate culture is encouraging this approach. In less than a year I learned more than in the last 3-4 years. 

Courses on Marketing, Management, Resilience, and Project management; badges and certifications in Sustainability, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion and Azure Fundamentals. 

Sometimes, we don’t even notice the learning possibilities a company has to offer, not to mention free and cheap opportunities on the web. 

**One of the greatest concepts I learned** here at Microsoft that will really stick up with me is that in order to find success, we need to switch our approach from “know-it-all” to “learn-it-all”. Be a constant learner and you will always be one step ahead of your past self.

This story is not only about what the title says. This story teaches us that you can achieve anything as long as you believe in what you are doing.
